What does the future hold for your library? How will you ensure your library is worthy of investment? What should you be focused on through your strategic plan? These are big questions that have never been more important for board’s to consider as we launch into 2017.

New resources are available in New York State to help educate and mobilize your board:

  • The latest webinar available on-demand from the New York State Library and LTA is called “Sustainable Thinking for the Future of Libraries.” The webinar starts off with a quote from New York State Librarian and Assistant Commissioner for Libraries: “…trustees must always be mindful of how their decisions impact the lives of people and the future of their community.” The webinar goes on to outline a line of strategic thinking to ensure your library is as “vital, visible and viable” as possible. Watch this hour long webinar at your convenience online at the LTA or the Division of Library Development (DLD) website.

  • Helping All Trustees Succeed (HATS) Curriculum Goes Live in 2017! In the fall of 2016 representatives from 15 public library systems came together for a Trustee Educators Cohort Meetup to support the optimization of current trustee education practices. While at the event, the trustee educators received an orientation to the new HATS curriculum you have read about in earlier issues of this newsletter. All fifteen systems committed to using the curriculum in the coming year and will be continuing the collaborative communication. The HATS ILEAD USA team thank the Library Trustee Association of New York State (LTA) for their input and support in developing this content and encourage your support of your local public library systems as they fine tune trustee education opportunities regionally.
