North Merrick, Long Island, New York

The North Merrick Public Library took to the streets on the last weekend of September 2013, at the local Chamber of Commerce’s annual “Fall Festival” street fair. At the fair, the Library made many new “fans” — on Facebook!

Librarians armed with iPads, using a wi-fi connection, asked fair-goers to “like” the Library, on Facebook, on the spot. Every new “fan” was given a BPA free water bottle” in appreciation for “liking” the Library. The blue-and-white bottles sport the library logo and the message “Like Our Page on”

The initiative was publicized in the library’s monthly newsletter which was delivered by the postal service to homes days several before the event – the timing was perfect and the recruitment a success!

The North Merrick Public Library plans to use its recently launched Facebook platform to advertise programs, answer patron questions, and promote services, as well as to disseminate emergency news and changes in schedules.
