Assistant Commissioner for Libraries and State Librarian, Bernard A. Margolis, announced today that the New York State Library, in partnership with New York’s 23 public library systems, has awarded 182 State Aid for Library Construction Awards totaling $14 million.
The awards are supported by capital funds appropriated in the FY 2014-2015 State Budget for the construction and renovation of public library and public library system buildings in New York State.
The list of awards is now posted at www.nysl.nysed.gov/libdev/construc/index.html. Project activities eligible for awards from the $14 million allocation provided by the Executive and the Legislature include financing construction of new library buildings, construction of additions to existing buildings and the renovation and/or rehabilitation of existing space.
Projects may include roof replacement, purchase and installation of alternative energy resources and new HVAC systems, windows, doors, lighting systems, electrical upgrades including broadband connections and construction of new or replacement of old walkways and parking lots, among other things. Furniture, shelving and equipment, including computer equipment, may be purchased for new or newly reconfigured or renovated space as a component of a construction project. Renovations designed to provide accessibility for library customers with disabilities are a high priority.
There is a documented need of $2.2 billion for public library construction and renovation in New
York State. Some building projects located in economically disadvantaged communities may be eligible to receive matching State funds for up to seventy-five percent of project costs. Libraries interested in submitting an application in 2015 should contact their public library system as soon as possible for information about program requirements and application due dates.
