Queens Library Honors and Celebrates Veterans in the Veterans Day Parade in New York City

Thanks to the efforts of our trustee, George Stamatiades, Queens Library was able to have a float and a substantial presence at America’s Parade, the nationally-televised Veteran’s Day event that marches down Fifth Avenue in NYC.

One of the veterans who joined us — in his uniform! — was 95-year old David Derby, who served during WW II. Mr. Derby is the father of Queens Library staff member Diana Chapin. We had invited the students and choir from Rockaway Collegiate High School to be our guests, as well. The students were awed by the opportunity to meet Mr. Derby, and regarded it as an opportunity to meet living history.

It was a wonderful chance for the library to honor and support our military while doing some community-building at the same time.
