News from the State Librarian

From the Desk of Bernard A. Margolis, State Librarian and Assistant Commissioner for Libraries

Winter 2015 issue of Trustee

December is a time for reflecting on what has transpired over the past year and thinking ahead to the New Year.  We have a lot to be thankful for. New York ’s libraries are meeting the needs of their communities in new and innovative ways, and I am thrilled to be a part of it. I hope you are too! Here are a few things that make me thankful:

I am thankful to be working at the New York State Library. I work with a top notch group of colleagues whose primary focus is service. How do we best serve the library community and the people of New York State?  Every day our staff helps libraries sustain, adapt and grow. NOVELNY, summer reading, early learning, workforce development, construction grants, E-rate discounts, public library districts, digitization initiatives and so much more all help New York libraries succeed.  From where I sit, I have the privilege of seeing that our library and library system leaders across the State are busy “creating the future,” and what an exciting future it is and will continue to be!

I am thankful for the service that our libraries are providing to their communities. I am constantly amazed at the wide range of programs and innovative services that our 7,000 libraries are offering for New Yorkers of all ages. Whether its makerspaces, digital literacy training, job search assistance, early learning programs, homework help, or ESL classes, our libraries are helping individuals, families and communities learn and flourish.

I am thankful for books in all types of formats. I love to read. I still mostly read traditional print books, but audiobooks are also a favorite. When I travel, I watch with keen interest the growing number of people who are reading e-books on their mobile devices. I am particularly pleased to see the number of New Yorkers who take advantage of the FREE digital talking books and players provided by the Talking Book and Braille Library.  Please help us reach every New Yorker who would benefit from this wonderful service.

I am thankful for the State Library’s research collections and our irreplaceable treasures. Being the curious sort, I have always loved to research and learn new things. In my new role as Interim Research Library Director, I have come to fully appreciate the depth and breadth of our unique research collections. Our many treasures, such as the draft Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, are awe-inspiring and priceless.

I am thankful for the Library Trustees Association of New York State (LTA) and the New York Library Association (NYLA).  I appreciate the services and support that LTA and NYLA provide to their members.  The networking and education opportunities provided by these organizations are crucial. If you are not a member of any library associations, I encourage you to consider joining. Libraries are all about connections and sharing information!

I am thankful for my New York colleagues. I have had the opportunity to meet quite a few library staff and trustees since I became the State Librarian in January 2009.  It delights me that library staff and trustees across the Empire State share my passion for great customer service and for meeting community needs through exemplary leadership, collections, services, and resources. It is truly a pleasure to be working with you.  I wish each of you a warm and memorable holiday season and a fabulous New Year!
