Fall 2015 issue of Trustee
Greetings, LTA Members and supporters.
I, for one, am glad the extreme hot weather is long behind us. Several days of 90 degree temperatures is just not something we can all adjust to easily. Thank you to those libraries who provided excellent opportunities to their community to escape the oppressive heat while using library services.
The LTA Summer was a busy one. In our goal to provide opportunities for library trustees to meet, learn from one another and from professionals in the library world, we co-sponsored a regional meeting in the Southern Tier Library System in July. You will read more about that in this edition. The LTA Board of Directors also held what has become a regular June planning session to do some strategic planning for your organization. You will learn about two Autumn initiatives in this newsletter. Our mission hasn’t changed: to help library trustees be effective in their roles through training and networking. However, as our library world changes, we do need to keep up with ways to communicate and share information, and to take your suggestions into consideration. More to come on that in future editions of the Trustee.
The planning for the 2016 Trustee Institute is underway. You will see details closer to the end of the year, but I can tell you we will be meeting in Plattsburg, NY in May 2016. The northern systems have quite an area to cover with a diverse population. That said, we will be working with those systems to develop topics of interest to them. However, all systems can benefit from attending because all library systems face funding, collections, construction and rural library issues. So please keep May 6 and 7, 2016 open for your attendance at the 2016 Institute.
The LTA board of directors have provided a review and feedback on the update to the Handbook for Library Trustees of New York State. This important document is really your best source for the basics we all need to know to be effective library trustees. As soon as the update is available, we will let you know through one of our monthly emails. Please take time to read the updated manual. It will be made available to you through your library system.
As always, our website contains the most current information available on the organization, and important links of interest to library trustees. We also have a Facebook page and a presence on Twitter. I hope you will connect with LTA through these media sites. LTA will be improving our presence on Facebook and Twitter to reach out to members and library supporters quickly and easily.
Library Trustees Association of New York is YOUR association. I encourage you to stay connected to us and share any comments or suggestions you have so we can be the best resource for you as a library trustee.
