Summer 2014 issue of Trustee
Summer Reading at New York Libraries for 2014 is well underway, involving children and families in fun, educational activities in public libraries and branches throughout New York State. Please encourage the children and families in your life to read this summer at their local library!
Last year, 1.76 million students participated through more than 1,100 library sites. Summer Reading at New York Libraries for 2014 is providing all children with age- and reading-level appropriate activities and fun reading suggestions as part of the science based program – “Fizz, Boom, Read.”

Summer Reading at New York Libraries
On June 18, I attended the statewide kickoff at the Schenectady County Public Library along with Education Commissioner John B. King Jr., Senator Hugh Farley and many other dignitaries and library leaders. This event once again reinforced the critical importance and central role of public libraries as education institutions and centers for community engagement. Does everyone in your community know about your library’s summer reading program and its benefits for children and families?
Summer Reading at New York Libraries provides an excellent opportunity for children to enhance and retain the literacy skills they have developed throughout the school year. Research has documented that during the summer the most significant differences in reading gains occur. Students in high need communities experience greater losses than those in more affluent communities. Involving children, along with their entire families, in summer reading programs is part of an effective strategy to close the achievement gap. Partnerships with Summer Food Service Program Continue to Grow
In 2013, and again in 2014, the Schenectady County Public Library, along with more than thirty other public libraries across the State enhanced its summer reading activities by partnering with the Summer Food Service Program to offer free meals to children at the library. Is your library participating? The State Library is working with Hunger Solutions, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the State Education Department and public library systems to encourage more public libraries in New York State to host this important program. Summer Reading Resources in Multiple Languages, for Multiple Audiences
Through Summer Reading at New York Libraries, the State Library offers an effective, voluntary summer reading program which is planned and implemented in collaboration with local public libraries. The program is free to children and their families. Students can visit their local library to engage in reading and reading-related activities for fun. There are a variety of options for participation at a child’s own interest and ability level.
