News from the State Librarian
Message from Bernard A. Margolis, Assistant Commissioner for Libraries and State Librarian
Summer 2013 issue of Trustee
Summer is a busy time at your New York State Library, as it is at public libraries all across our beautiful State. I wish to express my thanks to the library systems and libraries that partnered with us in 15 press events to launch this year’s 2013 Summer Reading at New York Libraries. My sincere appreciation also to the thousands of public library staff, trustees, volunteers and community sponsors who make this exciting program such a wonderful success each year! Because of you…over 1.7 million kids will have a fantastic summer and a more successful 2013-2014 school year, as they “Dig Into Reading!”
Here are a few other products and programs from your State Library that you as trustees might find of value and interest:
“What Every Library Trustee Should Know” – I strongly encourage new trustees to view this valuable new resource posted on the State Library’s website. The archived presentation of this popular new webinar is now available at http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/libdev/trustees/, along with a copy of the PowerPoint slides. In this webinar, “Handbook for Library Trustees of New York State” author Jerry Nichols covers the following topics:
• Your role as a Trustee;
• Effective Board Meetings;
• Legal and Fiduciary Responsibilities; and
• Working with your fellow Trustees and Library Director.
Public Library Construction Grants - The online application portal for 2013-2016 public library construction grants is now open at http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/libdev/construc/14m/index.html . I encourage you to consider applying for a matching grant to improve your library’s facility. Matching funds of up to 75 percent are available for construction and renovation projects of $5,000 or more. Contact your public library system director for more information on local due dates.
Public Library Districts Initiative - Looking for a way to stabilize public funding for your library? Has your Board discussed options for becoming a public
library district? A public library district may be the right path for your community. I encourage trustees to ask your public library system director about the variety of options available for improving your library’s governance and/or funding structures.
NOVELNY – Thousands of new online data resources will be available to you and your library patrons for FREE starting July 1. NOVELNY provides an online encyclopedia, New York and US newspapers, an extensive business information resource, a health information resource and thousands of magazines and journals for kids, teens, college students and adults. With the new GeoLinking feature, New Yorkers will be able to easily access all of these FREE NOVELNY resources from anywhere in the State without having to use cumbersome IDs and passwords.
Enjoy your summer! I look forward to seeing many of you at the 2013 New York Library Association Conference in Niagara Falls from September 26-28.
