A Message from Jeffrey W. Cannell, Deputy Commissioner of Cultural Education and Acting State Librarian and Assistant Commissioner for Libraries

What is Your 2020 Vision for Libraries?  Tell RAC by August 5!

The New York State Board of Regents has asked the Regents Advisory Council on Libraries (RAC) to take a visionary look at the future of library services and to develop a set of innovative policy recommendations to improve library services to the people of New York State.

In Spring 2011, RAC completed the first phase of information gathering from the library and education communities. The response was fantastic!  Comments from the some 95 individuals and library and education organizations that responded in Phase One are now posted on the RAC website at:

I want to personally express my thanks to the Library Trustees Association of New York State and the other public library trustees that submitted thoughtful comments and ideas. If you have not yet responded, you now have your chance!

On June 27, RAC launched Phase Two with a request for comment by August 5.   I encourage all library and library system trustees to work with their directors to actively engage local communities in this second and critical phase of information gathering about future library service needs of all New Yorkers. And don't forget to complete a survey and share your own innovative ideas!    A downloadable 2020 Vision widget for placement of a brief survey on local websites is available at:  .  You may also complete the online survey at this address.

For more information about the Regents Advisory Council on Libraries and to see a timetable for the development of the new statewide plan, please visit the State Library's
website at:  Any questions about the RAC 2020 Vision Process and this second call for input may be sent to John Hammond, Chair, RAC 2020 Vision Planning Taskforce at or to Bridget Quinn-Carey, Chair, Regents Advisory Council on Libraries at

I look forward to seeing many of you at the 2011 NYLA Conference in Saratoga Springs on November 3-5.  RAC, NYLA, the State Library and the Library Trustees Association of New York State are cosponsoring a session during the conference for attendees to learn more about the new statewide plan. RAC anticipates wide dissemination of a first draft prior to the NYLA Conference.
