NYSALB Annual Membership Meeting

Directors Present: R. Strauss, F. Picart, S. Stockman, K. Achilles, M.E. O’Connor, A.Elman, S. Swierczek, J. Hurley, and P. Dohrenwend. Excused: G. Stamatiades, Larry Jorgenson, R. Presutti, and S. Patton.
The meeting was called to order by President Richard Strauss at 12:16pm. He welcomed all in attendance and thanked the Saratoga Library Staff and Trustees for hosting the Institute. President Strauss gave the annual President’s report. He noted that the membership represents 60% of the libraries in NY State which is an all time record. There is a good relationship between NYSALB, the State Library System and Legislators. NYSALB is working with Amy Paulin and Hugh Farley on two bills that would support mandatory trustee training.
A motion to accept the minutes of the May 5, 2007 Annual Membership Meeting was made by A. Elman and seconded by S. Stockman. The motion carried.
A. Elman presented the financial report. He noted there will be an increase in the dues structure. Any questions should be addressed to D. Strauss. A motion to accept the report was made by F. Picart and seconded by J. Hurley. The motion carried unanimously.
There were no Communications or Old Business.
Under New Business D. Strauss presented the name of Rita Reissig from the Geneva Public Library to serve a term of 3 years as a Director of NYSALB. She will replace K. Achilles who is retiring from the board. Also placed in nomination were present directors F. Picart and L. Jorgensen each to serve a 3 year term. There being no further nominations, D. Strauss asked for a motion that the secretary cast a unanimous ballot. The motion carried. There are still vacancies on the board of directors. If anyone is interested, please speak with D. Strauss.
Karen Achilles presented the 2008 Velma Moore Award winner to the group. There were 21 nominations this year. The winner, Claudia Radin, is from the Horseheads Free Library, Chemung County Library District, the Friends of the Horseheads Free Library, and the Southern tier Library System. She was presented with a plaque and a check for $750.00 to go the library of her choice. The 2008 Distinguished Service Award was then presented to Tina Thompson from the Henrietta Public Library for 26 plus years of service to the New York Library System.
D. Strauss thanked Margaret Malicki, Association Manager, and Suzanne Stockman for all their work that made this year’s Institute a success. He thanked Carol Ann Desch for her display. Library items were raffled.
There was a motion to adjourn at 12:42pm. The motion carried. The meeting was reopened at 1:14pm to reelect Suzanne Stockman to a 2nd three year term on the board of directors. It was moved by K. Achilles and seconded by A. Elman to accept the nomination. The motion carried. This meeting was adjourned at 1:16pm.
