Each year LTA offers three awards that are presented at the annual Trustee Institute. It is time to submit your nominations for your outstanding candidates. February 26, 2016 is the deadline for applications. The Institute to be held in Plattsburgh, May 6-7, 2016.

The Velma K. Moore Award is a statewide award that honors the memory of Velma Moore, a founding member of LTA and wife of former NYS Lt. Governor Frank C. Moore. Who is eligible? Any individual or group that has made exemplary contributions to the development of library services in New York State. Nominations can be made by anyone in the library community.

Two awards are offered for individuals from the counties served by the three library systems which are hosting the 2016 Institute: Clinton-Essex Franklin, North Country and Southern Adirondack Systems.

The Outstanding Trustee award will go to a trustee who has shown a true understanding of their role as a Trustee and demonstrated unusual dedication and expertise in their role as trustee. The Outstanding Friend award will be presented to an individual in a Friend’s group who has given extraordinary service as a Friend.

Eligibility

Any individual or group of individuals who has made exemplary contributions to the development of library services in New York State is eligible for nomination. These nominees may be trustees, library boards or any group of library supporters. Nominations can be made by anyone in the library community in New York State.

Criteria for Evaluating Nominees

Measurable service to local, county, system or state libraries, advancing the effectiveness of these libraries.
Service in areas of legislation or other support that advances library issues with local, state or federal government.
Promotional services through publishing, speaking or involvement in professional or lay library groups or organizations.
Service to state or national library organizations, e.g. Library Trustee Association, United for Libraries, New York Library Association, American Library Association.
Service on State study committees.

Nominating Procedure

The letter of nomination should include:

Name and address of nominee.
Library affiliation.
A statement of not more than 250 words on the reason for the nomination.

Award Presentation

The Award, a $1,000 cash prize and award, will be presented to the recipient’s library or system of choice. The Award will be presented to the winner at the LTA TRUSTEE INSTITUTE, May 6th & 7th, 2016, in Plattsburgh, NY.

The Velma K. Moore Award was established to honor the memory of Velma Moore, one of the charter members of the Foundation (now LTA) and wife of former New York State Lt. Governor Frank C. Moore. Mrs. Moore worked actively for the improvement of library service in New York State from 1947 until her death in 1961. Mrs. Moore served two terms as president and was a member of the Board from its establishment. For thirty-three years Mrs. Moore was a Trustee of the Kenmore Public Library near Buffalo, New York.

The award was originally established in 1962, and made annually, with a gift from the Moore family.

Regional Awards – Outstanding Trustee & Outstanding Friend

One award for an Outstanding Trustee and one award for an Outstanding Friend, from the library systems participating in the 2016 Trustee Institute – Clinton Essex, North Country, and Southern Adirondack – will be awarded during the May 2016 Trustee Institute to be held in Plattsburgh, NY.

Outstanding Trustee Award: This award will be presented to a trustee who has shown a true understanding of his/her role as a trustee and has demonstrated unusual dedication and expertise in their role as a library trustee.

Outstanding Friend Award: This award will be presented to an individual in a Friends’ group who has given extraordinary service as a Friend, and to recognize his/her efforts to make our libraries a vibrant, active, and essential force in our communities.
