Whether you are a newly elected member to your library board or a long time member looking to improve your ability to render service to your community, we welcome you to our new, online boot camp for library trustees. Below and on the following pages you will find tutorials, documents, and other resources that will help you to become a better trustee.
Perhaps the best place to start would be to familiarize yourself with basic information on the New York State agency that governs the requirements of trustees and the organizations they oversee, the Division of Library Development, which falls under the governance of the NYS Education Department. Here they have a useful page on meeting minimum standards for libraries.
You can also explore webinars of our own and those of Webjunction, which has a host of available video seminar options.
This boot camp will follow the basic structure of the Handbook for Library Trustees of New York State, which you can download for free or get as a physical copy. This work was created by Jerry Nichols and Rebekkah Smith Aldrich with input from various organizations such as NYLA, PULISDO, the NYS Library, and your LTA. Each of the links below will take you to a page with various links and resources to get you up to speed on performing your duties to the high standards your community and you expect from you.
