Cuomo Budget Proposal
We succeeded in our first test of 2013! Working with allied groups we staved off cuts to library aid in the executive budget proposal. Under the plan released on Tuesday, the Governor calls for library aid to match 2012 levels (including the legislative additions). This is great news and gives us a base to work up from as we work with the Legislature to add support for coordinated collection development, MISP, and NYPL aid to support CUNY students.
Members to Know
Here are four legislators you should know.
Assemblyman Joe Morelle – This Rochester Democrat was just promoted to the position of Assembly Majority Leader, making him the #2 man in the Assembly. He is a big advocate of academic libraries and should prove to be a valuable ally.
Senator Hugh Farley – A longtime booster of libraries, Farley returns to the Senate and maintains the Chair of the special committee on libraries.
Assemblyman Micah Kellner – A Manhattan Democrat with a keen interest in e-textbooks, Kellner has been appointed to head the Assembly Committee on Libraries and Educational Technology.
Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages – Beginning her first term, this Long Island Democrat was an academic librarian at Hofstra University before diving into to politics.
