Treasurer Report given by Tim Gavin

Russell Bancroft, Morgan Stanley Representative will conference call in January 2016
He will discuss our accounts/funds
Tim spoke about our financial state, assets are in a favorable state. We are waiting on our accountant to complete our tax returns, which are due 11/15/15.
Balance sheet ending 9/30/15 was presented and filed for future reference.
A suggestion was made by Jean to the Finance committee to present a full financial picture twice a year

Nominating Committee

Jesse Feller has submitted his resignation to the Board, Accepted and confirmed via Email
Discussion held to seek a new board member for the North Country.. Clinton, Essex and Franklin  as well as other Library systems still vacant without representation
John McCarthy will be overseeing the Plattsburgh LTI May 2016

 

Communications Committee

Discussion on the Website and its improvements
Tish, Tim, Jarrod and Betsy are having monthly conference calls on the 22nd of each month to discuss events, stories and new developments for the website
Tim is working on the Legislative Portal to include Library legislation
Have an easier access to the LTA website, make it more standardized and include more videos

 

Awards Committee

Jean was named the awards chair for the 2016 LTI and she is working on the nomination process for the LTI 2016 awards.  Information will be posted on the website in mid November.

Old Business

Phil Archer hosted a LTA-STLS regional presentation in July 2015.  Very well attended, excellent subject matter, it generated a new membership. Phil will provide a written committee report for the next LTA board meeting

NYLA will hold their conference in Lake Placid the week of October 21st  through the 24th.  LTA will have a booth set up and approximately 4 board members along with Tim Gavin attending. 

3 Friends presentations are to be showcased by Sara Sacks, Potsdam North Country spotlighting

–  Accounting

–  Plain Air

– Merging Friends and Foundations

LTA will speak on Simple Strategic Planning

NYLA will have the unveiling of the New Trustees Handbook, they will be distributed at the conference

LTI Plattsburgh May 5th and 6th 2016

LTI Committee  ….John McCarthy, Tim Gavin with support of Adria Ripka.  Tish and Jean also volunteered to support the committee.

John McCarthy is exploring 3 themes

– Rural/ Small Libraries

– Advocacy

– Boot Camp Training with Libby Post

 

Possible Speaker:   Jerry Nichols

New ventures with the Plattsburgh location will include Offsite dining, with a voucher distributed to attendees for Friday night dinner to be used at 3 hometown restaurants.  John is exploring a City Shuttle to transport attendees to various sites, which will include City Hall, Hotels and Restaurants.

Possible Sunrise Series to be added to the agenda

Local Author night also open to the public

Discussion was held concerning cost.  Plattsburgh hotels are more cost effective than prior years, so do we

– Lower conference cost

–  Keep cost the same

–  Keep it the same, but beef up what participants receive

 

Sponsors are needed for North Country

Possibility of a Sunrise Series at the LTI… low impact exercise presented early in the AM

Carol Desch spoke about Legislation

The message for August was about Education

– Initiatives

– Funding

– Reconstruction funding

Working  trends are to have a Librarian in every school

It was a good legislation year but not the best for Libraries

The Governor vetoed 3 bills

– Poughkeepsie Trustee Election (library was opposed as well)

– Star Library Rhinebeck Special District

– Seymour Library Brockport Special District

 

Carol would like the LTA to promote the NOVEL NY Database

Bernie Margolis will speak at length about NOVEL NY at NYLA

The NOVEL NY survey is open to all to complete online

Conversation included the Summer Reading Program and the board received literature from Carol, READY TO READ

The kickoff this summer was held in Rochester, NY with the local Mayor, School Superintendent, and members of the NYS Senate and Assembly

Website was created and Facebook has a feature with a Day by Day Family Literacy Calendar

 

Announcement was made:  New Education Commissioner, Mary Ellen Elia

Library Development Specialist, two positions have been filled in the NYS Library

Librarians can now certify Blind Patrons to get books they are entitled to borrow via the Talking Book and Braille Library

Recommendation was made to register Tim Gavin as a Lobbyist for easier access to hear legislation

Carol was acknowledged with the boards Thanks and kudos to Will Villano, UAlbany Grad Assistant who has been working at DLD and helping with joint projects for trustee education.

 

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

Start the membership drive in November 2015.  Letters to be sent in November.

Motion made by George to accept the revised Bylaws, 2nd by Phil.
